July 26 marks the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem. This date was chosen in memory of environmental activist Hayhow Daniel Nanoto.
The main objective of this day is to encourage organizations and the various communities in tropical coastal areas to prevent the advance of profit-driven companies that seek to exploit nature, even at the cost of its detriment or damage.
According to data from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, over 50% of the world’s mangroves have disappeared in the last 40 years due to overexploitation by shrimp farming industries in areas where this type of natural habitat thrives.
The destruction of mangroves not only affects nature but also human settlements located in areas adjacent to these ecosystems.
Not only because it jeopardizes the food sovereignty of communities, but also because mangroves serve as a natural barrier to prevent disasters such as tsunamis, hurricanes, and other serious problems caused by climate change.
