September 7, International Manatee Day

On International Manatee Day, a call is made to global awareness to reaffirm the commitment to work for the conservation of this and all species that enrich biodiversity.

In recent months, the Caribbean Biological Corridor and the EcoAdap Project have participated in monitoring and tagging efforts for the West Indian Manatee (Trichechus manatus manatus) in eastern Cuba, in collaboration with the Greater Caribbean Manatee Alliance and the Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research Institute.

In an interview, Anmari López Alemán, Conservation Director for the Caribbean at this institution, explained that the program seeks to protect local populations, gather scientific data, and strengthen sustainable management of manatee habitats.

The project is supported by the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund (CBF), the International Climate Initiative (IKI), Welthungerhilfe, UN Environment Programme, AMACuba, and CITMA Santiago de Cuba, consolidating local and international efforts to ensure the survival and well-being of this emblematic Caribbean species.
