Concern for the environmental surroundings dates back many centuries, gradually fostering an awareness of respect and care for the environment around us, and leading to the creation of official initiatives for the respect, care, and official protection of natural environments.
August 13 marks the International Day of Environmental Organizations, which have a scope of action ranging from local to international levels, covering a wide variety of topics and areas that define their work and development, such as humanitarian aid, public health, research, economic development, human development, culture, human rights, technology transfer, among others.
These organizations have existed since approximately the 19th century, with the Red Cross being one of the pioneers. The most important role of environmental NGOs at the local level has been their direct work with the community, without the need for intermediaries, and it is for this reason that stronger ties are forged between the average citizen and the members of these organizations.
