This International Biodiversity Day, under the theme “Harmony with Nature and Sustainable Development”

The International Day for Biological Diversity is celebrated every May 22, and was proclaimed by the United Nations (UN) with the aim of raising awareness about the importance of biodiversity for human beings and, therefore, the need to care for and preserve it for future generations.
Biological diversity or biodiversity refers to the variety of existing living beings and the genetic differences of each species, including animals, plants, and microorganisms that are born, grow, and develop in a specific ecosystem. It includes the different evolutionary processes and changes that occur with species and their entire surrounding environment.
This term was established in 1985, at the International Forum on Biological Diversity held in the United States.
The goal is for the human species to be able to live in a much more sustainable world, with greater justice and equity, where the distribution of natural resources can reach a greater number of people, who unfortunately today suffer from hunger, misery, and death due to a lack of them.
Stopping biodiversity loss is an investment in people’s well-being. To ensure that all human beings live in a more sustainable world, urgent measures must be applied to protect and preserve all ecosystems, as well as the biological diversity that inhabits them.
Among the objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is to address one of the greatest challenges facing modern humanity: improving the well-being and living conditions of all human beings.
In this regard, biodiversity plays a vital role, as the development of economic, social, and cultural activities that meet all basic subsistence needs depends on it.
