The Caribbean Biological Corridor (CBC) is actively participating in the “Workshop for the Manatee Conservation Plan: Building a Subregional Strategy”, to be held from May 5 to 7 in Bayahíbe, Dominican Republic, and organized by MARE-DR and FUNDEMAR. The workshop has financial support from Norway and organizational support from UNEP.
The meeting will bring together experts, organizations, and representatives from different Caribbean countries with the purpose of advancing toward more coordinated and effective management of manatee populations in the Greater Antilles, a key species for the balance of marine-coastal ecosystems. Throughout the three working days, participants will analyze the current state of manatee conservation in the region, identify the main threats facing the species—such as habitat loss, pollution, and human activities—and discuss the principal challenges for its effective protection.
Likewise, collaborative work will be undertaken to identify regional opportunities and strengths, as well as to define concrete strategies and actions that will improve coordination among countries, strengthen knowledge management, and promote more effective conservation. As a result of the workshop, progress will be made in building a Subregional Action Plan for manatee conservation, which will serve as a roadmap to guide joint efforts in the coming years. This process will include the definition of objectives, strategic lines, and possible monitoring indicators to evaluate its implementation.
The CBC, through its Secretariat, will contribute its experience as a regional cooperation platform and promote dialogue among the different actors involved. This workshop will also strengthen a collaboration network among institutions and specialists in the region, which will contribute to improving the coordination of actions and the exchange of information for manatee conservation. The CBC’s participation in this type of initiative reaffirms its commitment to the protection of biodiversity, ecological connectivity, and sustainable management of Caribbean marine ecosystems, promoting joint solutions to shared environmental challenges.
